Dommedag Als and Slagtebænk Dybbøl – Book covers, Gyldendal

Tom Buk-Swienty’s immensely successful accounts of the 1864 Prussian-Danish war, Dommedag Als and Slagtebænk Dybbøl (loosely: Apocalypse Als and Deathbed Dybbøl), have appeared in a number of editions.

For this new reprint we’ve designed simple, no-nonsense covers based on photos from the war – a group portrait of Danish officers for Dommedag Als, the ramparts after the battle of 18. April 1864 for Slagtebænk Dybbøl. The photos have been colorized for the occasion, hopefully making them relatable in a way they weren’t in black and white: Not just historical photos but photos of actual humans, just as alive then as we are today.
