Larverne, Ansaldo og krydderihandlerens søn – Book cover and layout, Gyldendal

Robert Zola Christensen’s novel Larverne, Ansaldo og krydderihandlerens søn is a tale about a series of strange occurrences in 1749: The plague has spread across Europe, large stone-eating worms are discovered in a mine shaft, frozen birds emerge from a lake. Something is fundamentally out of whack.

The cover is a composite of illustrations from Grösste Denkwürdigkeiten der Welt oder sogenannte Relationes Curiosæ from 1683. This same book is, together with etchings from Rijksmuseum and the British Museum, the source of the thirteen illustrations within the book, each a circular cutout, as if seen through a spyglass looking into a strange, foreign world.
